Jodie’s got a new apartment
She got big dreams, a check list, upstairs is
room to be setting styles,
nice view for miles and miles

Part of everything she keeps there
is an empty photo album on her night stand
Never got around to filling it
She just mends her whiles with hopeful smiles

She decorates everything so
she waits around for friends to make so
one day soon she’ll have them here
one day soon she’ll have them here
one day soon she’ll have them

Benny met her at his market
He sells lemon trees, plant food, five dollars please
other kinds and rare finds
Jodie fell in love

Happened all at once when she was
looking to fill a nook, she looked
Benny said a bit about how
his lemon trees need love now

Every chance she went to market
she’d steel a glance at Benny’s plants and dance
stumble out the words she meant to say
shuffle up and down and try to say
Something intelligent, “Thank you, please, I like trees.”

[Chorus]
All around she sees a reason to buy
A yellow lemon tree can certainly try
to fill up all the time that she waits
for yellow lemons. Yellow lemons wait.

Sometimes she’s sensitive and the
simple things hurt the most
Sometimes she hears herself say
“Remember me? I was here yesterday.”

Benny’s not the smartest guy but
even he knows this girl’s got the hots
Thinks he’s got to play it cool
like he’s still in school

She can tell the difference now between
Meyer lemons, Lisbon and Eureka.
But she can’t figure out how it is that a
guy like Benny still calls her ma’am

[Chorus]

The years pass and still
she imagines
yellow lemons on her
yellow lemon trees

like she does
children in her
picture frames.
Such a shame

Waiting’s not the easiest thing
She calls it hope. Feels her finger for a ring
feels the hope, feels the love, feels it in
everything. Jodie’s still in love.

[Chorus]

Yellow Lemons Wait
