Born in Bellefonte,PA in 1967, Brian L.Diehl grew up in Lisbon Falls,
Maine, and began playing the trombone at the age of twelve. He
received a B.M. from Northwestern University and an M.M. from the
New England Conservatory of Music (where he became the first
brass player to receive the prestigious Rabb Presidential
Scholarship, as well as the Presser Award 1991). Mr. Diehl was
twice a fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center and worked under
Seiji Ozawa, Simon Rattle and Marek Janowski. He also completed
a three-year fellowship with the New World Symphony, under the direction of Michael Tilson Thomas.
Mr. Diehl has recently been named Principapl Trombone of the Springfield (MA) Symphony Orchestra, under Maestro Kevin Rhodes. Former Principal trombone of the Florida West Coast Symphony, Mr. Diehl has performed with the Boston Symphony, Boston Pops, Hartford Symphony Orchestra, Rhode Island Philharmonic, Florida Orchestra, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, where he made a recording in 1989 of the music of Verdi with Sir Georg Solti. He has also performed under Luciano Berio, Leonard Bernstein, Eduarto Mata, Gunther Schuller, Stanislaw Skrowaczewski, and Leonard Slatkin, to name just a few notable conductors.
Mr. Diehl is an avid soloist and proponent of the trombone. He has appeared as a guest artist with the National Repertory Orchestra (Dilorenzo’s Little Buckaroo, which was composed for Mr. Diehl) , a winner of the New England Conservatory Orchestra Concerto Competition 1992; Finalist in the Houston Symphony’s Ima Hogg Solo Competition; and chosen as Active Participant in the Christian Lindberg and Joseph Alessi Seminars.
Mr. Diehl appears with such brass ensembles as Epic Brass and Innovata Brass. He has recorded with the New World Brass (Dahl- Music for Brass), and with the Millar Brass Ensemble of Chicago. Mr. Diehl performs solo recitals and master classes throughout the US; notable masterclasses at such institutions as Tanglewood and at the Eastman School of Music, at Eastern Washington University, and for the past seven years as the Faculty Trombonist with the Epic Brass Institute.
As an educator, Mr. Diehl has influenced countless young trombonists from all over the country. He has just joined the faculty of New England Conservatory’s Preparatory School, and serves as Artist Faculty at University of Southern Maine in Gorham, ME. Mr. Diehl has held teaching positions at Florida International University in Miami, and University of South Florida in Tampa, and has served as adjudicator for state and district auditions, including Massachusetts All-State trombone adjudicator.
