NOVEMBER 2008 DJ OF THE MONTH

UNDECIDED

BIOGRAPHY:

Undecided, otherwise known as Chris Shelton, was captivated by the scene in early 1998 and since then has been cultivating his own style of funky, hard-hitting breaks referred to as "That Nu-Funk Sound." In 2002, Undecided formed Urban-Breaks, a crew responsible for hosting multiple monthly and weekly breaks events in the Sacramento and surrounding areas. With the success of these events, he decided to further explore his passion behind the turntables and relocate to Seattle in early 2004. In Seattle his rising popularity was aided by close relationships that were quickly built with well-known local break-beat

artists. Relocation also allowed Urban-Breaks the ability to add even more talented DJs to the roster and produce shows on a more consistent basis.

In June of 2005 Undecided found himself back in Sacramento where his crew returned to hosting monthly breaks events. In September 2005 Undecided and production partner Kiro sat down to work on their first breaks release in the Infected Logic Studio. This release found its way to popular UK breaks label Mob and received a remix from acclaimed producer The Rouge Element. With the success of his work with production partner Kiro, Undecided's exposure has brought new-found opportunities to advance musically while focusing more of his energy on solo production projects that give him the chance to create his own form of dirty funk bass lines.

Since the conception of the production duo "Kiro & Undecided", he has worked with a number of producers on original tracks including a side project

under the moniker Trouser Snakes making dirty house music and production & DJ group The Bass Masons. Since his first release, Undecided has a collection of current and upcoming releases on reputable labels such as Mob, Mechanoise, Sango-Music, Muti and System.

With many years invested into the music his skills have allowed him to play with many talented Domestic and International DJs. A natural performer, his genuine energy behind the decks is unmistakable and his talents undeniable.

1. Where did you find electronic music?

My buddy Skinny Dave actually introduced me to

house music in the 6th grade.

Nothing really developed from it until my earlier high school years. We had a

group of friends and we would all play most of the local house parties and some

of the school dances (EDM was quite popular back then). I made transitions

through a lot of styles and it took me a number of years to find a style that

suited me well. From there I got the opportunity to move to Sacramento, which

at the time I thought would be huge for my DJ Career... oops. I have been very

fortunate with talented and influential friends to keep me afloat and keep me

moving along at a good pace.

2. So, why are you called Undecided?

It started as my little joke and it stuck around. You know that if you are

throwing a party and the slot says "Undecided" a number of desperate

DJs are going to contact you about filling that slot… that, and I

couldn't think of a

cooler name. I wanted to avoid cheesy monikers like

‘Sir Johnny Rocket The Third’. Shit, I should have used that one. Oh well.

3. Tell us about your first rave.

I honestly don't remember much other than it was a massive and I probably

spent the whole night telling people how much I liked them, which probably lead

to me wearing obnoxiously large-bottomed pants. Yay! I survived!

4. What has been the highlight of your career so far?

Having the opportunity to travel to different cities, playing interesting

parties and making some good friends along the way.

5. What dance music genre needs to die?

Bassline (wobbly hip-hop hard house) & bad Dubstep (the good stuff can

stay).

6. Tell us about the dynamic duo, Trouser Snakes.

Sacramento definitely

enjoys a good breaks track here and there, but the number

of die-hard supporters just isn’t there. I wanted a more commercial outlet

because like every DJ, I like to play more often and for bigger crowds. I

started fooling around with house (Fidget, Electro & Bass Heavy) sets about

a year ago and wanted to make some of my own music to make my sets unique. I

struggled with a few of the elements and trying to over complicate the music

because of my breaks background and approached my good friend Rich (Dick Jesus

or Rich Soul) to start a new project with me. A few sessions in the basement

and the “Audio Pornographic EP” (feat. “Audio Pornographic” &

“Money Shot”) was born. We were very fortunate to have Dov (from Muti)

pledge his support. From this, Mechanoise & Sango-Music approached us to do

a few remix projects for their labels & sister labels. From

that, the

Trouser's remixed Ferdi Schwartz's “Vanille” and Great Scott &

Undecided's “American Gangster”. Things are looking very, very good for

this project and we expect big things in the near future.

7. Do you have any big plans for 2009?

I am currently at work on nice little breaks tune, but you can expect to hear

some mid-tempo and some house as well from me this year. I am sure that Kiro

and I will get down to business sometime soon and the Trouser Snakes duo are

going to continue putting our minds together. As Undecided, I currently have a

few tracks pending release between the end of this year and early next year, so

moving forward, it is definitely looking to be a promising year.

8. Where can I buy a copy of Obsessive Nature that you produced with Kiro?

This was the first track I ever released and it just so happened to be on one

of my favorite

labels of all times. Rogue Element supplied a killer remix that

pretty much carried our track to success. You can still get a copy at

Beatport.com, or if you still play vinyl, I am pretty sure any place that

carries a backlog of breaks will have it. If that fails then try Gemm

or Discogs. Oh and Beatport.com, of course.

9. What do you think Sacramento's underground scene needs?

Is Silk considered underground now? In my opinion Sacramento needs to step up

its game. Half-assed events make us look half-assed. I know it's easy. We

(Urban-Breaks) used to throw parties there, but we would bring respectable

headliners and not recycle talent. Seeing a similar show at the same venue

every week is very easy to get burnt

out on. I see positive changes in Silk and

have seen some improvement, but I think they really need to limit whom they

allow to throw parties there.

As for an actual underground scene, there isn't much of one outside of

Reno, SF, & the middle of the woods. When it does happen, it is generally

sweet though. I personally like that clubs like Barcode and The Park are

stepping up and bringing some of the hottest talent on the planet. I feel that

a more structured and professional environment such as a club is a better

approach to electronic music because you have everything set up legally. I have

got to give it up to the underground crews out there that I have personally seen

doing production properly, like United Vibes, Classic Grooves, Middle Ground

(Stage Decoration) & Lite Brite.

Also, promoters: pay your DJs.

10. Any words of wisdom to the new DJs out there?

Step your game up before you walk with your nose in the air. You need to set

yourself apart. Don't pass out CDs that aren’t mixed well and that do not

contain good music. When posting your mix online, please do not make the title of

your thread “Free CD” because clearly you are not going to pay the licensing

on the tracks to re-sell the music. Put 100% effort into what you do and

don't cut corners. Know your worth, there are tons of talented DJs out

there short changing themselves. Look yourself in the mirror and say

"I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and doggone it, people like me."
