Face Up: Telling Stories of Community Life

October 2006
Community Family Life & Recreation Center
Durham, North Carolina

Through a dialogical process, residents from multiple neighborhoods, students, faculty, and staff from multiple universities, and a selection of special friends were challenged to define values of genuine interaction. The values the participants collectively developed became the basis for the subsequent 2 years of the Face Up collaborative project.
An early planning visit in October 2006 included participation by a diverse selection of participants in the TOPs dynamic Consensus Building Protocol.
The Workshop aimed to create a process that defined genuine interaction between South West Central Durham Quality of Life Members, and University representitives.
The guidelines were that everyone has wisdom, everyone’s wisdom is needed for the best results, the whole is greater than the sum of it’s parts, there are no wrong answers, and everyone should have the opportunity to hear and be heard.
Participants were invited to write recommendations for genuine interaction.
Participants practiced reflection and action.
