Defining community and peace with mindfulness and history
Thursday January 18
(Arts Block Period 2:00 – 4:15) 

Description: Participants will utilize contemplative education strategies and participant generated review protocols to generate ideal Community and Peace statements.  The collaborative exercises from this highly interactive workshop will be the foundations of the entire “Building Community, Making History Collaborative Project” featured in the National Portrait Gallery’s “Portraiture Now: Framing History” exhibition and at Duke Ellington School of the Arts. 

Aims:	A.) Have participants learn and model some basic concepts of Collaboration.
B.) Learn to create a rubric to illustrate assessment and use as a guide for observation and awareness.
C.) Use a rubric for both the evaluation of collaborative work and the fabrication of a collective project where the outcome is communally determined.
D.) Expand our definition of Community through dialogue.
E.) Document each other with Digital Cameras.
F.) Practice Mindfulness – which is the practice of peace.
		
Theme:	Looking at history with mindfulness, we can create community and peace.
 
Materials:	Raisins						Digital Projector
	Lesson plan to distribute			30 Packets
Mirrored paper with COMMUNITY and PEACE for rubric/List  
	Opening evaluation handout			Digital Camera		
	Colored Paint pens

Methods:	A.) Mindfulness Exercise w/Raisins and Introductions	35 minutes
B.) Introduce rubric using participant’s contributions	          5 minutes 
C.) Community and Peace Presentation/ handout packets	60 minutes
D.) Have everyone Contribute to Rubric, highlighting                                         qualities from the raisin exercise for background,                                     encouraging mindfulness 	                                          5 minutes
E.) Digital Camera Pass Around/Opening Evaluation	        15 minutes
G.) Closing reflections					                10 minutes
