Lesson 2

Visual Literacy: Working together to produce ideal reflection and action images.
Monday, July 17, 2006
(Afternoon Session 3:45 – 5:45)

Description: Participants began by developing critical thinking through Literacy Through Photography (LTP) methods made famous by Wendy Ewald and Duke University’s Center for Documentary Studies. Participants then applied their new visual awareness to the ESP central concept of “Backward Design” curriculum development by working with images generated by Bonnie Nizamis’ Digital Storytelling Workshop and Brett Cook to craft multimedia narratives based on ESP Peer to Peer Essential Questions as well as ideal reflection and action statements generated from ESP seminar attendees in the previous collaborative project workshop.

Aims:
A.) Have participants consider multi disciplinary/multi media assemblages and how they affect viewer accessibility to ideas.
B.) Recognize installation as a tool to speak in different ways, through a variety of materials. Realize different materials as different languages.
C.) Create a Protocol that works as a guide to articulate aspects of “Reflection” and “Action”
D.) Develop literacy of images with modified visual thinking strategies
E.) Participate in individual, small group, and entire workshop learning experiences.
F.) Practice Mindfulness
