Swans at Winona Lake
The most recent blog entry, Taking Flight, contemplates the ability of large aquatic birds to take flight from a body of water. This recalls a trip up the Inside Northfork Road to Winona Lake in October of 2007 (see the blog entry Nothing But Trees?) where the swans put on quite a show, including a classic take off and fly by! Here is the video.

A Bathing Beauty
Usually bear video footage shows bears eating or on the move in the search for food. However, during a hike around Lake Josephine on August 21, I had the pleasure of witnessing a grizzly bear take a break from berry munching in order to enjoy a bath in the lake! An account of this bear encounter is included in the September 26, blog entry.

Moose on the Loose!
They seemed to be everywhere! The Moose of the Swiftcurrent Valley movie shares brief glimpses of video shot on a summer day along the trail past Fishercap, Red Rock and Bullhead Lakes. Details of the hike are included in the August 8, 2007 Blog Entry .

The Harlequin Mate, Preen, and Feed Show
At the end of a census count that canvassed McDonald Creek from the Lake to Avalanche Creek, Wil and I spotted our first Harlequin’s of the day. For 40 minutes we watched as they put on a “mate, preen, and feed” show.

Grizzly Drama at Many Glacier
A hike up the Siwftcuurent Pass trail provides the opportunity to view five grizzly bears as they interact on the mountainside above Bullhead Lake on April 30. A description of this video clip can be found in the May 17, 2007 blog entry.

Black Bear Near McGee Meadow
A black bear feeds along the side of Camas Road near McGee Meadow. It is hard to believe that the bear can find much to eat in this sparse vegetation. A description of this video is included in the April 28, 2007 blog entry.

Mallard Duck Mating
Mallard mating practices are shown in three parts. The first two involve multiple females with a single drake and the third scene includes two drakes with one female. An explanation of this video is included in the April 29, 2007 blog entry.

Harlequin Duck
A male harlequin duck navigates the swift moving waters of McDonald Creek. A description of this video is included in the April 29, 2007 blog entry.

Eagle Fishing
An eagle swoops down, snatches a fish out of the water and makes the trip to the other side of the river. The clip shows a wide angle view as the eagle passes over flocks of ducks while managing to avoid collision with other eagles and gulls.

Springtime Bear
A recently emerged grizzly bear feeds on greens growing along Going to the Sun Road in early April, 2006.

Great Gray Owls
While hiking on August 15, 2006 Mary and I were treated to a rare sighting of great gray owls. Returning on October 5, one of the owls again put on a great show.

McDonald Creek Flood
Raging flood waters of McDonald Creek flow over an observation deck in November 2006. The flood, caused by a combination of melting snow and steady rains, re-sculptured the banks and submerged a foot bridge.

Bear Has Dinner at Old Man Lake Campground
With startled campers looking on, a grizzly bear enters the Old Man Lake back country campground, then catches and consumes a ground squirrel before heading on his way.
