Jambo! Greetings from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania! This is NABJ/UN Fellow Syan Rhodes, anchor/reporter for WMC-TV in Memphis.  It’s 10:30 p.m. (TZ time) and I’ve been charged with writing today’s/tonight’s entry. We’re just getting back from dinner at a place called City Gardens. With American pop and R&B music in the background, our bunch feasted on everything from fish to Indian veggies and French fries! Not that I needed anymore food…Emirates Air has a superb meal service!

After 20 hours in the air, it was incredible to finally approach the continent! This is my first trip overseas and I couldn’t believe I was actually looking at the Eastern Coast of Africa! On approach we flew over Zanzibar…the waters on the edge of the beach were amazingly blue…. I hope we get a chance to see them up close during our day trip later this week.

I know I speak for my colleagues when I say I’m anxious and excited to get out in the field and discover the untold stories that are waiting for us. Stories, I am sure, will be vastly different from and probably better than the ideas we pitched in our application essay.

(Each day, a member of the NABJ team will have a blog entry. First up, Syan Rhodes (left, in first photo) of WMC-TV in Memphis)
