Can you see it in the picture- right between my paws?
I could hear it buzzing at the base of one of the trees as soon as Punch and I ran out of the house. There are lots of these things flying around out there and I jump and snap at them. Punch just stares at me. She is just too slow to catch them. I bet if she thought it was a bread crumb hitting the floor, she’d be fast enough! This winged thing was spinning on the ground. It was big and had stripes. Leslie (She Who Must Be Obeyed) said it was a Cicada Killer. It know what a cicada is ... I’ve killed lots of them ... without needing a stinger! That CK was really noisy (just like its food) and I kept swatting it with my paw. Punch was really leery of it. She wandering away and sniffing the yard while I was keeping an eye on that thing. Hounds have weird priorities sometimes ... I’d like to pound on my food bowl for service right now ... but I know have a job to do first. Anyway, I was watching it and then striking it with my paws and this went on for a longtime - maybe five minutes - and it wouldn’t stop moving or buzzing.
When Punch came back to watch what was happening, I decided this called for desperate measures. I didn’t want to put my teeth on it. It didn’t look like something that was okay to put your teeth on... not like a bee. So, I threw my whole body on it and rolled on it! That shut it up! Yeah, but it was still sorta moving ... not much though. I lost interest and just peed near it so I could do something else. Punch stalked it - after I did all the work. I guess that what being a pack leader is all about - keeping our yard safe from big buzzing winged things with stripes! Now, I’m gonna pound on my bowl. I’m hungry.
