Here we have a muddy Peeb face that is looking mighty sad because I was too busy to pet her. She didn’t tell me what she wanted so I went back to working on the computer.
As I have noted in a previous entry (last year’s, Punch Speaks), I have taught little Punchie to say “out.” I have to keep re-enforcing it because she would rather just stare at me or try to charm me, instead. When she is really serious, she stands up and puts her paws on the arm of the chair, then grabs my left arm with her one of her paws and leans intensely into my face. I ask “What do you want?” She’ll then make a series of sounds and I strain to hear anything that sounds familiar. If it isn’t a definite “out” - it doesn’t count. I have also worked on the word “water.” It took me awhile to realize what she was saying... to understand her response. I was exaggerating the pronunciation by saying “WAH-ter.” Punch was saying a very clear and breathy, “Wah.” She didn’t know that the two syllables went together!
This time, I wasn’t hearing anything that sounded familiar. She seemed to give up and wandered off,
Punch went and got Mako from the other room. He followed her back in and the two of them stood there, staring at me. I asked Punch what she wanted and she looked at Mako. I turned toward Mako and asked him what she wanted. He pawed the stool by the water bowl - his signal for water. Punch ran to the bowl and acted as if she was going to drink. Mako pointed a furry, tan paw directly at the bowl.
“Oh,” I exclaimed, “she wants water!” Punch spun madly in a circle, Mako reared up on his hind legs and pawed the air in celebration. That’s when I realized that Punch went and got a translator! Mako speaks Peeb!
