When you commit to one of the vegetarian lifestyles the most important thing you can do is be very explicit with your friends. Your friends want to accommodate your needs. In order to accomplish this they need to know exactly what are your needs.
They need to know if you are vegan that most pasta is made with eggs and so much more. They need to know that anything prepared commercially needs to be scrutinized very carefully. Most commercially prepared products contain chicken broth, eggs, and or folic acid derived from animal byproducts. They need to know that if you are lacto most cheese is cured with animal byproducts. You need to let them know that only cheese cured with enzymes are acceptable. You need to let them know that gelatin is derived from animal hooves. You need to research every aspect of your diet to ensure you are not compromising your lifestyle in any way.
If you let your friends and relatives know how serious you are the more likely they are to accommodate your needs. They want to please you and will go out of their way to do so. However, never neglect to bring your own food and if you are suspect of something do not eat it.
I recently attended a wedding where I asked the caterer about a certain item he had prepared. He assured me no meat products were involved. Hr was wrong. This brings us to the next topic The Vegetarian and the Restaurant. Until then healthy eating and good friendships.
