Bob Karty

pianist - educator - recording engineer

I’m a pianist, music teacher, and recording engineer in Oakland, CA.

In addition to working as a freelance pianist, I’m a regular member of three groups:

Tanaóra is a sextet I co-lead with singer/songwriter Cecilia Engelhart and percussionist

Michael Spiro, which blends Latin, Brazilian, and American jazz.

Orquesta La Moderna Tradición is a 10-piece Cuban charanga orchestra (like a salsa band

with violins and flute instead of brass).  I’ve been with them since their founding in 1996.

Conjunto Karabalí is a 10-piece salsa band led by percussion master Michael Spiro and

Santana percussionist Karl Perazzo, and featuring top players from the Bay Area Latin and

jazz scenes (Conjunto means there’s no timbales).

Tanaóra Digital Release!

Tanaóra’s debut recording ‘Día Real’ is now available at the iTunes store and at the Amazon mp3 store.

Our record deal turned out to be a wash - the record company never did the promised publicity, among other things.  Fortunately, we were able to get the rights back.

You can still pick up a copy of the CD at our shows, and also at  Amazon.com.

In addition to playing piano and keyboards, I co-produced ‘Día Real’ with Cecilia Engelhart and Mike Spiro, and did a major portion of the engineering and editing.  You can find sound clips on the ‘Listen’ page here and more at Tanaóra’s web site.  I’ve just added some quotes from reviews to the ‘Press’ page.

SFJAZZ
In March of last year, I engineered a week of live recordings for the 2-CD set recently released by the SFJazz Collective, featuring some of the most celebrated musicians in jazz:  saxophonists Joe Lovano and Miguel Zenon, trumpeter Dave Douglas, trombonist Robin Eubanks, pianist Renee Rosnes, drummer Eric Harland, and bassist Matt Penman.  Focusing on the music of Mc Coy Tyner, the Collective performed in Vancouver, BC, Yakima, WA, Eugene, OR, Chico, CA, and two nights in San Francisco.  This was the most intense engineering gig I’ve done, and a lot of fun.   The mixes were done by Jeff Cressman for a limited release on SFJazz’ in-house label.
