WSOP Day 4: BJ’s Pocket Guide to the 2007 WSOP

In the weeks leading up to the World Series, I wanted to make a daily schedule for myself that I could keep in my pocket. Instead of just listing the starting days for each event (like the official schedule), it would list every event in action that day, whether it was on Day 1, Day 2, or at a final table.

I started adding more and more information. If ESPN was taping the table, that was important, so I’d include that. I should also have a page that lists the times of satellite tournaments, just in case a player asked me for that information. (The media people are often viewed as an information desk, a role that I’m comfortable with.)

Then, instead of just writing this down in my little notebook, I thought it would make sense to design it on my laptop and print it, since I would only need to do it once. Then, it started to look like a cool little book, and I decided to add more information on it, like which players have the most bracelets and who won all the previous Main Events.

John Caldwell at PokerNews loved the idea, and asked me to print up copies for everyone on the PokerNews team. I asked them to print some extra copies that I could pass around to some of the other people in the media. I received the finished versions from Kinko’s on Sunday, and I have already run out of copies. Everyone loves them, and some people have suggested that I sell them.

I’m a little busy covering the WSOP to run a bookselling business, but apparently WSOP Commissioner Jeffrey Pollack loved it so much he said that Harrah’s should license it. (I’m not taking him at his word; it may have just been a flippant comment.) The Bluff guys have suggested it might sell better than the official programs they’re offering.

I may look into cutting a deal with someone so more people (especially the players) can get a copy. I just can’t afford the printing costs myself. (Printing them at Kinko’s costs about $6 a copy, and that’s with a volume discount for 100 copies.)

I’ll figure out something in the next day or two. Until then, here’s a look at a few of the pages so you can have a rough idea of what “BJ’s Pocket Guide to the 2007 WSOP” is all about.
