Learning Objectives (Introductory Workshop):

This workshop is designed for mental health professionals, psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, therapists, counselors, nurses, life coaches, and anyone interested in learning how to measure and increase their clients’ motivation to change behavior. Upon completion of this two day workshop, participants will learn and be able to apply a variety of effective techniques to working with clients dealing with behavior change. Specifically, participants will be able to:

  1. *Summarize the history of Motivational Interviewing (MI).

  2. *Describe the evidence base for the use of MI for behavioral change.

  3. *Understand the “Spirit” of MI.

  4. *Discuss what motivates people to change.

  5. *Learn and practice specific techniques to increase client motivation.

  6. *Describe the 6 stages of change.

  7. *Learn, practice, and use the 4 core skills of MI in conversation.

  8. *Employ several techniques to develop discrepancy between goals and current behavior.

  9. *Use strategies to explore, amplify, and resolve ambivalence to change.

  10. *Demonstrate the ability to recognize and reinforce “change talk.”

  11. *Employ several techniques to reduce client resistance.

  12. *Describe how MI can be integrated into current forms of treatment.

  13. *Observe demonstrations of MI techniques

  14. *Practice a variety of MI techniques in dyads and small groups.


Instructor:

Dr. Bill Matulich is a clinical psychologist in San Diego, California. He is a member of the international network of Motivational Interviewing trainers (MINT) and has taught Motivational Interviewing workshops and classes to teachers, counselors, case managers, psychologists, interns, substance abuse counselors, nurses and others.


CE Approval:

This workshop meets the qualifications for 14 hours of continuing education credit  for MFTs and/or LCSWs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. PCE number: 4262.


Dr. Matulich is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. Dr. Matulich maintains responsibility for this program and its content.


There is an additional $25 fee if you are taking this workshop for CE credits.


Location:

Located on the ocean, just 40 minutes north of San Diego, The Tamarack Beach Resort is a beautiful and relaxing setting. Rooms in the Mediterranean style building are comfortable and the meeting space is unique with a panoramic view of the ocean. Special room rates are available for workshop participants.


Schedule:

Training starts each morning at 8:30. There is coffee, tea and a continental breakfast from 8 to 8:30. We will break for an hour for lunch and end the day at 4:30.
