Different Not Easier

Today I received a request
Asking for a line
A thought to write on a
Remembrance card
To be laid at an international shrine.

So how do I feel about it all?
I’ve managed to keep at bay
Get past the haunting images
Locked them tight away.

Can I face it all again
Am I strong enough to try?
Do I even want to?
So tired of asking why?

I know I’m going to have to
Be the one that speaks
Shed my tears privately
For those beneath the wreath.

100,000 die each year
With numbers steadily rising
Still no help from government
For those left just surviving.

But be assured you restless
Sleepless souls that wander
I hear you calling in the night
For you I’ll walk still longer

The end of the earth and back again
I know you walk beside me
As I lay my flowers in memory
Of a much loved missing father.
