Bike the Deschutes
Recreational bicycling is growing in popularity, especially here in Thurston County. At the same time, there is an increasing appreciation for the value of watersheds in our state as they provide habitat for salmon and wildlife, drinking water, recreational opportunities, and esthetic enjoyment.
A group of environmental and bicycle enthusiasts at the Department of Ecology are organizing the third annual “Bike Your Watershed” event to promote the natural fit between watershed awareness and bicycling. While there are numerous bicycling events and countless watershed education programs, this event would bring these two concepts together.
Our vision is to expand the event over time to cover most, if not all of the state. Bicycling is the best way to experience a watershed, and we believe it builds an appreciation for people and place.
The Bike Your Watershed event is designed to promote watershed education through broad-based community involvement and outreach. The organizers are assuming that increased awareness of the local watershed will bring about increased support for programs designed to protect and restore watersheds.
