Daniel Flahiff - principal

Daniel co-founded Big Fig after a stint with the Mattel Toy Company where he worked as a perma-lance animator in the Digital Design Studio, integrating new digital technologies into Mattel's video and sizzle pipeline. He was also responsible for designing and animating spots for Fisher Price, Nick Jr., Barbie and other core brands. In 1999 Daniel became an art director for Mattel’s Creative Advertising Services where he directed spots for Intel ‘Play’, Hot Wheels and many more.

In January, 2001, he and Julie created Big Fig Design and together they ran the company out of their second-story studio on Hollywood Boulevard.

After he and Julie relocated the company to Seattle in 2006, Daniel headed Big Fig’s branding, motion graphic and web/interactive projects, working hands-on with designers, animators and clients.

Among other honors, recently Daniel’s blog project, (incli)NATION, was named one of the top 25 architecture blogs on the internet by Eikonographia [for about 48 hours].

Daniel was born in Los Angeles, California. His films, videos and installations have been seen on three continents, most recently in Stockholm, Sweden. He is a passionate fly-fisherman, somewhat competent skipper, and enjoys cigars from nations under trade embargoes.

Julie Flahiff - principal

Julie’s path to Big Fig was forged through the advertising world where she worked with Cole & Weber, Seattle and McFarland, Richards & Graf. She soon gravitated to the design arena where she worked with many talented artists at Gage Design and in her own freelance practice in Seattle.

After joining Walt Disney Consumer Products, she quickly became design manager. In 1996 Julie became design supervisor for 'The Mouse' where in addition to overseeing project development, design, and execution, she discovered a passion for product development through her extensive work with licensee style-guide development.

Julie partnered with Daniel in 2001, and together they founded Big Fig Design. She headed Big Fig's graphic design and product development projects, before moving on to become Global Director of Merchandise and Trend for Starbucks Coffee in 2006. She continues her partnership with Big Fig on an advisory basis.

Among her many honors, Julie has been awarded a Northwest Addy Award and a Communication Arts Design Annual Award of Excellence.

Julie was born in Seattle in 1966, is married to Daniel, and has 2 energetic young sons, Oliver and James. She is a fearless mountain bike rider, loves to cook authentic Tuscan meals, and never misses a re-run of 'As Time Goes By' if she can help it.
