Promoting confidence in traffic cycling through education and training
Washington State DOT (WashDOT) has completed a survey showing that most people with bicycles have never had any training. "When asked why people didn't bike more, many said either they never learned to ride a bike or didn't know how to bike in traffic."

BDTI has completed a preliminary study of ordinary people on bikes who responded to an ad for those afraid to ride in traffic. These people are not club cyclists. With our training, students reported overcoming fear and reluctance to ride with traffic so that their routes and riding opportunities had expanded significantly. They learned how to stop and turn quickly, under control, which can certainly save lives in an emergency. They learned how important it is to follow the rules of the road. They soon began to lose their fear and to enjoy their new independence.
We are seeking the funding to build our organization and bring our training to many more people.
