The Day School has a rich, rigorous curriculum that inspires confidence, exploration, and creative expression. Students develop a love of reading and writing as they explore fine literature, social issues, and historic themes. The math and science programs build critical thinking and complex problem solving skills. Individual strengths and interests are emphasized. Our goal is to excite students about learning, to empower them to reach their full potential, and to give them a sense of belonging to the Jewish people through their study of modern Hebrew, Jewish history, and Israeli culture.

Curriculum Overview:

Mathematics introduces students to basic number concepts, both abstract and concrete, and then prepares them for rigorous Algebra I and II in the Middle School.
Science is based upon a learning-through-discovery approach. Curiosity is encouraged, whether learning about the solar system or being introduced to Chemistry and Genetics. A strong emphasis is placed upon scientific questioning, discovery, lab work, and safety.
Hebrew begins in Kindergarten and continues through Eighth Grade. With use of the Language Lab, students enhance their abilities to read and converse in Hebrew, which is highly individualized and interactive. Beginning in Sixth Grade, students receive instruction in how to read the Torah, how to chant Trope , and how to interpret the Hebrew prayer book. This provides them with an excellent foundation for their Bar and Bat Mitzvah.
Language Arts utilizes theme-based literature with an emphasis on research and writing skills. Students are encouraged to examine ideas and demonstrate creative and critical thinking in unique ways.
Social Studies explores the geography, history, and cultures of our world. Students are able to analyze significant societal trends and events through research, student reenactment, field trips, guest lecturers, and creative presentations.
Judaics provides students with a sense of Jewish community and values as it thoroughly orients them to synagogue life. Our unique approach integrates Jewish concepts into secular studies.
Art inspires students through the study of various artists, techniques, and through hands-on exploration of a wide variety of media, encourages them to express their individual abilities.
“[Our son’s] deep level of confidence in his academic abilities have never been stronger than his years at The Day School.”
  1.  Music introduces students to various composers, musical styles, and musical theories. In addition, students attend concerts of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and the Baltimore Opera. They receive instruction on instruments such as recorder and keyboard to enhance their understanding of rhythm, sound, and musical concepts.

Mathematics

The Mathematics program at The Day School presents students with a wide variety of challenges and experiences. Our hands on approach, small groups, and individualized tracking of gifted and talented Math students create an environment where students are challenged as they master basic skills at the Kindergarten level through complex problem-solving in Algebra II. Mathematics is taken to an exciting level as throughout the program students apply their logical thinking and complex reasoning to solve problems in real-life situations.

Language Arts

Beginning in Kindergarten, students are introduced to reading by a hands-on, yet highly structured, phonetics program. Students develop a love of reading by exploring fine literature, social issues, Jewish topics, and historical themes. Analytical reading, writing, vocabulary, grammar, spelling, and critical thinking are key parts of the program in each grade along with an emphasis upon independent research for older students. Students think, talk, read, and write about ideas that have meaning in their lives while they build the necessary skills for SATs and High School.

Judaics

Our unique integrated Judaics and secular curriculum affords students the opportunity to take their Hebrew and Judaics knowledge to a new and exciting level. In addition to specific classes in Hebrew and Judaics, students explore the roles of Jewish thinkers, leaders, and movements as part of the curriculum of their other subjects. We prepare our students to utilize their Jewish knowledge and experience in all aspects of their lives as they grow into the Jewish leaders of tomorrow.

Mitzvah Projects & Tzedakah

The Day School emphasizes the fundamental value of performing Mitzvot by integrating Mitzvah projects into every aspect of our curriculum. In addition to weekly Tzedakah collection, students participate in the Mitzvah of giving through projects such as Echo House where, on a monthly basis, students and faculty pack lunches for delivery to an inner-city outreach center. Whether it is collecting hats, socks and gloves, traveling to Garden Harvest to plant vegetables for the needy, or sharing an art activity with residents at a nearby eldercare facility, our students begin a lifelong commitment to Tikkun Olam, caring for our world, and Tzedakah.

Enrichment

Students demonstrating exceptional abilities flourish in an academic program to challenge them while they explore their interests and abilities. In addition to multiple skill levels in each subject, many formal Gifted and Talented programs exist at The Day School such as Honors Chemistry, Honors Shakespeare, Honors Creative Writing, Gifted and Talented Art, and Honors Choir. Many of our students participate in programs such as the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth

Technology

The use of cutting-edge technology is a consistent theme that resonates throughout The Day School. Utilizing the Computer Lab, students begin in Kindergarten to learn the many facets of computing - from keyboarding to Internet research skills to Power Point presentations. Routine use of the extensive Myerberg Library is further enhanced by our Library Science faculty who instruct students in all aspects of research through the use of our large book collections and database. Hebrew and Spanish Languages are taught in the Language Lab that allows students the opportunity to hear themselves, as well as native speakers.

The Day School has three brand new Smart Boards.  The Smart Board is a large, touch-controlled screen that works with a projector and a computer. The projector throws the computer’s desktop image onto the interactive whiteboard, which acts as both a monitor and an input device. Users can write on the interactive whiteboard in digital ink or use a finger to control computer applications by pointing, clicking and dragging, just as with a desktop mouse. Buttons launch a popup keyboard and a right-mouse-click menu for more input options.

The library has on hand The Topaz, a text magnifier by Freedom Scientific.  It was purchased through the generosity of the Sol C. and Sonia Berenholtz Large Print Book Fund. The Topaz features a 22" LCD widescreen monitor and can magnify a page up to 78 times its original size. Its moveable reading table allows the user to read type, handwriting, and small details with ease. The maginifcation and color display of the Topaz can also be conveniently adjusted.       You can visit for more information.
