Kimono & Cupcakes

Not the kind of bum that hops on and off of boxcars, but the kind who (as of yet) doesn’t have to go in to an office every day. Or anywhere, for that matter.

Today marks 3 weeks since I moved back to my beloved Osaka. You know, it really is smelly here. That aside, I’ve been having a good time of it so far. I survived my first major bender (narrowly), resolved not to go on any more benders for a while, attended 2 birthday parties, missed a wedding party, bought some new hotpants, bought and returned a dress I didn’t want (for the wedding I missed), made a bunch of cupcakes, and did a bunch of other stuff. And of course, I’ve been knitting all the while.

The photo above is of the first cupcakes I made.  They are Cuba Libre (or rum and Coke, for my Ohio friends) flavor, and I got the recipe from the Cupcake Bakeshop (recipe by Rachel of Coconut and Lime).  I took them to Heather’s birthday party (wish I had some photos of that), and if nothing else they looked cute ( I didn’t taste any of the finished product, but I found out the next day that they were dope). Using the pastry bag to frost them resulted in a mess of hilarious proportions. I wore a kimono to the party, which I’ve been dying to do. I’ve amassed quite a lot of Kimono stuff, and I wanted to try them out. I laid out 2 possible ensembles, this one from and antique kimono shop in Kamakura, and this one that I bought at a flea market in Kyoto when I was traveling with my cousin and her family. I ended up going with the first one, because my boyfriend said it was more suitable for fall. I have no idea upon what he based that opinion, but whatever. I accessorized with a couple of little tile pins from a pottery shop (also in Kamakura) and my less-crazy Geta sandals. Decent reviews, and I was stoked.
Then yesterday, I called off from my night job and spent the afternoon making more cupcakes. They were were also on the Cupcake Bakeshop (and probably elsewhere), and the recipe is by Christina of Wishing on Clovers. My friend Jesse wanted to eat one, but could apparently not be bothered to come and get it. That’s how people are when they have broken fingers, I guess. Anyway, I had 4 of them for my dinner, and another one today for my breakfast. Cute and tasty, but methinks too much butter. Also, I believe my baking powder is past its prime. Sunrise, sunset. Sunrise, sunset.

The happiness of being a bum
