In the late spring, Andy and I decided to plant our first garden in the backyard. We had kept a little section grass-free when we were fixing up the backyard just for this purpose. We went to the store to buy our first seeds - pole beans, two kinds of squash, cucumbers, carrots. We weeded a few times.

And now, over the past few weeks, Andy has been slowly harvesting what seemed “ready” for harvesting. First a few pole beans showed themselves. (Sam particularly liked pulling these off.) The pole beans may have been a little stunted as our “poles” weren’t higher than 3 or 4 feet. The cucumbers seemed to do fairly well. They were short, but fat, and tasted pretty good. The squash plants had beautiful foliage and a few flowers, but alas, no squash. We probably didn’t give them enough room. And as you can see from the picture above, our carrots were a little on the small side. For the record, they still tasted like carrots!

We hope to learn from this year’s mistakes in order to have a more plentiful harvest next year. Our biggest one was probably planting them all too close together. We will also be on the lookout for bean poles, although most stores didn’t have them this past year. If you have any suggestions or tips, we’d love to hear them!

Overall, we enjoyed it and feel like we were a little organic this year!

Harvest Time!
