Smoking Garden One
December 2006 - January 2007
Process Artia, Rivertown Plaza / Prague, CZ

The first in this ongoing series, Smoking Garden One, is a mixed media sound installation inspired by the concept of sound effecting the growth of plants. Inputted signal collected from the surrounding environment is fed back and filtered to allow selected frequencies to emit. In preparation for this installation it became important to use found objects to house the plant and transducer. In this case the most readily available objects were cigarette butts and their empty boxes.

Smoking Garden Two_Transference
June - September 2007
Galerie Califia, Horažd’ovice, CZ
(Bethany Lacktorin and Anja Kaufmann)

Continues the exploration of the idea that naturally occurring frequencies between 3k and 5k (birdsong) effect a plant’s intake of surrounding nutrients. This piece creates a connection between sound, nature and the encroaching effects of humankind on plant growth as it relates to urban agriculture. Think about how natural city sounds could effect the growth of plants for better or worse.
