Wolverley is situated a few miles from Kidderminster, near to Cookley, Kinver and Bewdley. It sits alongside the River Stour and the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal. The earliest record of the village is from the 8th Century, when it was known as Uluardele, a name that would evolve throughout the centuries into its current name of Wolverley. Maybe, in another thousand years it will come to be known as ‘Luverly’. Wolverley Carnival takes place on the first Saturday of July and attracts over 2,000 visitors. The venue is the Memorial Hall field. All proceeds from the Carnival are distributed amongst non-profit making village organisations. The Traditional May Day Fair is an offshoot of the Carnival and takes place on the Sunday before May Day Bank Holiday Monday. The venue is the Church Hall. Wolverley has its own legend, that of The Swan, a charming story about a local knight, Sir John Attwood, who, having been captured by the Saracens during the crusades, miraculously gets carried back home to Wolverley on the back of a white swan. This story is reenacted by local villagers, who are known as the Solcum Mummers. All proceeds from the May Day Fair and Solcum Mummers are added to those of the Wolverley Carnival and distributed as mentioned above. Applying For Funding Get Involved What’s happening in 2010?
