Man of Honor Debate: by Mrs. Fogey

In light of the upcoming movie “Made of Honor” with Patrick Dempsey, Ben and I got into a discussion of whether or not it is appropriate for a groom to ask a female friend to stand on his side and visa versa for the bride and a male friend. Ben made the point that it is not appropriate for a groom to put a woman, who is not his wife, in such a place of honor. (Especially since attendants provide advice/accountability). I was surprised with Ben’s objection. I have been to weddings where the bride had a male attendant, and I have heard of the groom’s female friend standing on his side. I never saw a problem with it (I even think the movie looks cute...but that is beside the point). However, his explanation does make sense. So, I decided to put the question out for you guys to debate. Is it appropriate for a bride and groom to have an attendant of the opposite sex?
