Benchmark on 10.5 “Leopard”
Benchmark on 10.5 “Leopard”
2008
UT2004 is about the same at 1024x768, except the AVG score is consistently higher than Tiger. And Botmatch Max Quality is much better on Leopard than Tiger. So the driver is optimized better in a way that it can handle more models without losing frame rates. Since results are consistent or better than Tiger, this confirms the fact that the GUI in Leopard is either much more taxing, or just simply not optimized (read below).
WoW is playable. Settings all LOW at 1024x768. It feels very smooth if the camera is angled right (horizon at +80% of the screen aka seeing more ground than sky/trees/textures). Definitely more playable than my brother’s eMac with Radeon 9200, but there are great differences in range of frame rates (80 fps sometimes, then 20 fps at high textured area) can make this game more annoying than having constant 15-20 fps on the eMac). I didn’t try it in raids or anything, but surely it’ll be fine. I’d take it over the eMac anytime in any case. I guess if you want to squeeze the best performance out of WoW just install bootcamp and run Windows (better drivers, and DirectX is heavily optimized vs. OpenGL.
Leopard though feels worse than Tiger, GUI wise. I know I run it at an insane 1680x1050 which can be rather taxing on the poor GMA 950 with the Core Image and all... but I think it could use optimizing. Tiger feels fluid and made this machine feels top of the line, while Leopard makes this machine feels a little old. Even Exposé stutters! We’ll see how it is on 1024x768 screen but my gut is telling me that it won’t be much better. Anyways hope you enjoyed this review. I would love to have a Mac Mini as my media center, but that’s another day... Cheers! UPDATE: now that I played with Leopard more, turning off the 3D dock helps. Try that if you feel that your Leopard is slow, GUI wise. How? Google!
