Emma Hardinge Britten is known as one of the greatest pioneers and advocates of the early Spiritualist movement that swept the world in the latter half of the 19th century. Not limited to the Spiritualistic Trance Mediumship for which she was best known, Emma, like many mediums of her time, is also noted for demonstrations of Automatic Writing, Psychometry, Healing, Prophecy and Inspirational Speaking. Emma’s Mediumship produced outstanding results, proving to the many thousands that came to witness her Trance Messages, the dead continue to survive and can return from that conscious realm and prove it so.
During her tours throughout many countries, including Canada, the U.S., England, Australia, New Zealand & elsewhere, Emma contributed greatly to the growing body of published works on the phenomena of Spiritualism. She is best known for her work, “Modern American Spiritualism,” where she presents in detail Spiritualism’s message and purpose that soon became a significant part of a “new” religious theology.
However tribal in its nature, yet garnering the interest of many scientific and modern day thinkers of its time, this movement’s numbers grew into the millions and is generally known worldwide under two names: Spiritualism & Spiritism. Today there remain quite a variety of metaphysical movements that lay claim to the legacy of this eminent Spiritualist from England – Ms Emma Hardinge Britten.
