Mimas patrols outside the rings, its famous crater Herschel clearly visible, as if it were an eye keeping watch on its parent planet. The impact that formed Herschel was so violent it left cracks on the other side of the moon. Mimas is mostly a ball of water ice, about 400 kilometers across. To the right is another recent view of Mimas as it drifted in front of the camera during a survey of Saturn’s weather.
