Ancient Fires

This false-color view of volcanic stones in Gusev Crater comes from the rover Spirit. Recently, the robot geologist has been studying a feature nicknamed “Innocent Bystander” because it was crushed by the rover’s wheels while they were aiming for another target. Innocent Bystander is interesting because it may have been formed by either a fumarole or hot spring.
