Spirit has been busy examining the "Home Plate" formation and its weird rocks. On the left is a view from the rover’s hazard avoidance cameras, showing the robotic arm placing its instruments on the rocks. On the right is a look through one of those instruments, the microscopic imager. Scientists are working under the hypothesis that explosive volcanism, driven by the interaction of magma with water, formed the layers of Home Plate and similar features.
