If you have time we recommend visiting some of the following places and events in Basel.
Marktplatz
A square bustling with food-stalls each morning. You can also see the ornate red town hall (The Rathaus), feel free to wander in through the gate and admire the courtyard.
Spalenberg is a great little shopping street close to Marktplatz. Enjoy the quirky shops and beautiful old houses along the way.
Münsterplatz and the Münster
Enjoy Basel’s biggest church, see the grave of Erasmus, admire the ancient paintings and tombstones in the crypt and walk through the convent garden. Around the back of the Münster look out over the Rhine to Germany and France. Take time to marvel at the little boats crossing the river, which travel only by the current of the river, no motors or energy required! A river crossing in one of these is definitely a must during your stay.
Museums everywhere!
Basel has the largest density of museums of any city in the world and one highlight is the world famous Kunst Museum (Art Museum) close to the Wettsteinbrücke. Along with the excellent resident collection there will be an exhibition of Van Gogh landscapes when you’re staying.
Along with the Kunst Museum there is also the Beyeler Foundation. A world renowned privately owned art collection, the art and museum building are well worth a visit. There’s a planned exhibition on Alberto Giacometti when you’re visiting.
The Tinguely museum houses a unique collection of interactive art (see the picture above) from the famous Basel artist Jean Tinguely. There will be an exhibition entitled “Armour, Rust & Robes” when you’re here. If you can’t make it to the museum you can see his world famous fountain near the Theatre just off Barfusserplatz in big Basel.
The Basel Paper museum (Basel Papiermühle) is a working paper mill where you try your hand at making paper and calligraphy.
If art isn’t you thing!
The weekend of the 22nd of August sees Basel host the JugendKulture Festival a city wide event which showcases local up and coming music bands (both good and bad!) on stages around the city. There will be plenty of live music and festivities.
There might also be the annual Im Fluss music stage. This is a floating music stage located in the Rhein close to the Mittelerbrücke, the main bridge in Basel. You can sit on the river bank and enjoy a beer and performance!

Marktplatz
Is het cenrtale plein in de oude stad. Iedere morgen is er een levendige markt met stalletjes met groente, kaas, bloemen ed. Je vindt er ook het prachtig gedecoreerde gemeentehuis (Rathaus) waar je even naar binnen kunt lopen om de mooie binnenplaats te bewonderen.
Spalenberg is een erg leuke winkelstraat vlak bij Marktplatz. Er zijn leuke winkels en prachtige oude gevels. Ook de stegen en straatjes in dit gebied zijn de moeite waard.
Munsterplatz and the Munster
Op de Munsterplatz staat Bazel's grootste kerk. Erasmus ligt er begraven en er zijn mooie schilderingen en graftombes in de crypte te zien. Ook de kloostergang is het bekijken waard. Achter de Munster is er een prachtig uitzicht over de Rijn naar de heuvels van Duitsland en Frankrijk. Let ook op de kleine bootjes waarmee de Rijn overgestoken kan worden, alleen op de kracht van de stroming, dus geen motoren, lawaai en stank! Een tochtje met zo'n bootje is zeer de moeite waard.
Bazel is een stad met zo'n beetje de grootste dichtheid van musea ter wereld en een hoogtepunt is het beroemde KunstMuseum bij de Wettsteinbrücke. Behalve een uitstekende vaste collectie zal er in augustus een tentoonstelling van landschappen van van Gogh zijn.
Behalve het Kunst Museum is er ook de Beyeler Foundation (Beyeler Stichting). Een wereldberoemde private kunst-collectie die zeer de moeite waard is. Ook het gebouw is bijzonder mooi. Voor augustus staat er een Alberto Giacometti expositie gepland.
Het Tinguely museum biedt onderdak aan een unieke collectie van bewegende kunst (zie de foto hierboven) van de beroemde uit Bazel afkomstige kunstenaar Jean Tinguely. Er zal deze zomer een tentoonstelling “Armour & Robes” over harnassen en kleding zijn. Als het museum te veel is kun je zijn wereldberoemde fontein zien bij het Theater, vlak naast Barfusserplatz.
En als kunst je ding niet is:
In het weekend van 22 augustus is er in Bazel het JugendKulture Festival, waarbij op podia over de hele stad plaatselijke en andere bands (goede en slechte) zullen optreden. Er zal heel veel life muziek en feest zijn.
Misschien is er ook de jaarlijkse Im Fluss muziekmanifestatie. Dit is een drijvend muziekpodium in de Rijn, bij de Mittelerbrücke, de belangrijkste brug in de stad. Je kunt daar op de kade zitten en bij een biertje van de muziek genieten!
