Tribal Fusion: Slinky, Locks and Pops with Joy Herbst

Joy Herbst is a lifelong student and performer of dance- originally ballet, modern, jazz and hip hop, and now Dark Cabaret, Fire Belly Dance, ethno-Tribal Fusion and Progressive Belly Dance. As a performer and teacher of Tribal Fusion Belly Dance and the director of the new dark cabaret performance troupe, Melange Gitan, she brings unique stylization and precise technique to an ever evolving art form, the oldest art that we know-- dance. She is particularly fond of egyptian/oriental dans, karshilama, the dance of the ghawazee, romany, flamenco and persian dances, in addition to American Tribal Style and tribal fusion dance as well as the eclectic movement and styles demonstrated by such artists as Dalia Carella, Rachel Brice, Cammi Vance, Jill Parker and Ultra Gypsy, Lulu Sabongi, Desert Sin, Frederique, Unmata, just to name a few. Slick Tribal Moves and Zil Breaks with Trisha McBride

In this workshop we will be focusing in on two important fundamentals of Tribal Dance. The first is how to add strength, and emphasis to your moves, and ques. Learn how to put an exclamation point on the tail end of your dance sentence! We will be going over different combinations that are real body, and eye candy. All while keeping fluidity in your movement. This leads us into "Zill Breaks," and phrasing the second part of this workshop. Say goodbye to Zill phobia, with a simple precise new understanding of your percussion accompany instrument. Sound better, and play with moving with style and grace. Beginners are welcome. This is an open level workshop.

Trisha McBride began her adventures in Belly Dancing in 1996. Starting out at Kismet dance studio in Salt Lake City, Utah. That same year she witnessed Carolena Nericcio, of Fat Chance Belly Dance on stage at the Utah Annual Belly Dancing Festival. Falling in love with American Tribal Style Belly Dance, she moved to San Francisco California to study with Fat Chance, and Jill Parker of Ultra Gypsy. The combination of studying San Francisco's Tribal Belly Dance style, and Salt Lake's Cabaret style, Trisha developed a dynamic repertoire of dance movements and an ultimate addiction to belly dance. Balancing Workshop for Tribal & Fusion Dancers with Vadalna

This workshop will cover their unique tray balancing method as well as tribal sword balancing technique. The workshop will begin with a yoga infused warm up targeted specifically for tribal dancers. From there, posture, stance and basic tribal movements will be briefly reviewed. Dancers will then pick up their sword or tray and begin to learn beginning balancing techniques leading eventually to intermediate Vadalna tribal fusion balancing movements. Dancers will then be encouraged to find a partner and learn the nitty-gritty of tribal fusion improvisation while balancing. From there, participants will take the arsenal of knowledge they’ve just acquired and fuse their new movements into a choreography.

Vadalna is the newest tribal collaboration to transform NYC. Creators, Mimi Fontana and Naraya, bring their years of experience from Maqamikaze Dance Company and Alchemy Dance Theatre to create a fusion of styles and backgrounds in their newest endeavor. Classical Egyptian cabaret training meets tribal belly dance where tribal fusion and a splash of hip hop make it oh-so-nice. Check it !

"Drum Solos" are not drummer's solos, they are dancer's solos! Join Eastwinds Tribal Drumming and learn an actual drum solo with the format and signals for both drummers and dancers. . This unique workshop is for all levels of dancers and drummers. Members of this class are encouraged to join Eastwinds in a performance of the drum solo at the Hafla!
Drummers please bring your instrument and dancers, bring your talents and energy. We'll bring informative hand-outs and "cheat-sheets".

Dipal Shah is a lifelong student and dance performer. She has originally been an Indian classical dancer – Bharatnatyam and mastered her expertise in folk and western style dancing as well. She is a young, passionate dancer who started out with the Indian classical dancing at a very young age and has been teaching for about 7 years and has an experience of over 12 years in this field. She not only teaches Bharatnatyam but also brings unique stylization, choreography and precise technique to an ever evolving art form of the fusion used in Bollywood and the Indian folk dances. (13)
