WELCOME TO BALBOA MAGNET!
The Explorers
We would like to extend a warm welcome to all our Balboa families, both new and returning! The 2008-2009 school year is going to be yet another exciting opportunity for our students to reach their academic goals and pursue their dreams.

Balboa Gifted Magnet is a school built upon the dedication of great educators.  Since 1978, Balboa Gifted Magnet has welcomed thousands of gifted and high-ability students through its doors, and graduated some of the most well-prepared, disciplined and top-performing students in the state.  Balboa has been recognized as a California Distinguished School.  It has been honored by the Los Angeles Unified School District for some ten years in a row as one of its top academic schools, with some of the highest elementary school scores in the State of California.

At Balboa Magnet lessons are experienced, not just taught.  New ideas and skills emerge from the pages of books and are turned into unforgettable experiences by our creative team of 27 veteran public school teachers.  Some examples include:

  1. Three-day ocean study at Catalina Island.
  2. Art study at the Getty Museum and MOCA.
  3. Real-life settings to teach mathematics.
  4. Comprehensive resources.
  5. Botanical studies in the Balboa Gardens
  6. Multi-discipline after school program
  7. Comprehensive vocal and instrumental music program including a
   90-piece orchestra

A state-of-the-art education awaits every student accepted at Balboa Magnet, but what truly distinguishes its classrooms are the timeless basics of teaching:  Strong discipline, character education, high expectations of students, and the development of effective work habits.

School Mission
The mission of Balboa Magnet School as developed by members of the school community is to engage students from all social, cultural, economic and linguistic backgrounds, in a comprehensive and challenging educational program that fosters academic excellence and responsible citizenship.

School Wide Goal
To accomplish this mission, which is aligned with that of the District, our school wide goal is that all stakeholders, including staff, students, parents and members of the community, will work as a team to develop a strong academic program with a rich, thinking, meaning-centered curriculum which supports the development of skills necessary in contemporary society.  A fundamental goal is to encourage all our students to play an active role in their own learning, and to become life-long learners.
