LIFE ON THE STREET FROM LONDON TO LOS ANGELES
LIFE ON THE STREET FROM LONDON TO LOS ANGELES
My main interest has always been street photography. Whilst I have done candid work, I am particularly keen on ‘street portraiture’. The images here are part of a theme I’ve been working on over the past 2 years entitled ‘Life on the street, from London to Los Angeles’.
The street is both a public and very private place. In most cities an unseen population spend their lives sleeping in doorways and unseen by the passing office workers, whilst others make their living busking or selling the Big Issue. It was my intention not to portray these people voyeuristically, but to engage with them in an intimate portrait, designed to force the viewer to see them as deeply human and full of personal history. The street is also a place for public interaction and activism, the most obvious example being Brian Haw’s vigil outside Parliament.
