1st Graders’ improvisations, assessments, & play songs

These podcasts are examples of assessments. Following the Kodály approach of preparation, presentation, and practice, at this point the 1st graders are practicing dynamics. The 1st graders assignment was to add dynamics to pre-composed songs so that I could hear the forte (loud) and piano (soft) they added to the songs. There were five groups in each 1st grade class. After each group added dynamics to their songs, they then had to explain the song and their dynamic choices to the class. We all then listened to the song. This was a fun assignment for the students as well as an excellent assessment tool for me to see if they understood dynamics.
