So let me clue you in on how your first month of college will go.

Hey....Hey
My name is____..... My name is________
Where are you from?.....( Easy answer)
What’s your major?...... (Not so easy answer)

Surprise.  Not everyone knows what they want to be when they grow up. Once you decide what you want to be when you grow up.... you might just change your mind.  Sure
being a lawyer sounds great, but did you know that USNews says that it is one of the most overrated careers.  So now you want to change your major. Well hate to tell you but you are not so unique.  About 60% of college students change their majors.

My suggestion for finding the perfect career.
1. Your college will have some sort of career counseling.  It is free and they have test and all that fun stuff.

2. Talk to someone in the field.  A lot of the fields that have great job security are in fields that people don’t know a lot about.  If you find someone who really loves what they are doing, they will give you a good feel for the field.

3.  Shadow-  Ask a professional if you can shadow them for a day.  A lot of students realize that they love or hate a field after a few observation hours.  Ask.... what’s the worst that could happen. You find out that you can’t stomach watching a surgery before you waste your life away in Med. School.

I, with the help of a couple of websites, have compiled a list.  What is the list of you ask.  Well, if I could have and endless number of careers and more than 24 hours a day, these would be a few of my choices.

Audiology-  This was on my list even before I saw it listed on the top 25 careers at usnews.com. What is Audiology?  Well an audiologist told me that she was “ a doctor of hearing, not a doctor of the ear.”  No you don’t just sit and push hearing aids all day.  Audiologist work with cochlear implants, work in the school systems,  work in hospitals, and even get to meet all of those famous musicians when they fit them for their ear monitors.  So what do you need to be an audiologist?  A doctorate degree.  You skip the masters and go straight for the  AU. D.  It will take about 3-4 years, but then you get to make your siblings call you Doctor So-and-So.  Additional perks.  Not many people know about the field so there is not much competition, and thanks to the baby boomers you’ll be in business for a while!

Landscape Architect- You want just be creating a secret garden in Martha Stewart’s backyard ( which come to think of it, she probably does that herself....amazing woman).  You might help restore the Everglades, or work on projects in urban plazas or the zoo.  Want to work for yourself.  Well this might be the career for you! The average salary is about$50,000, but hey this is naples... so the average is probably a little higher.

Teacher-  OK..... this is where I have a little bone to pick with USnews.  They say that teaching is one of the most overrated jobs.  Having been in the teaching profession I totally disagree.  The moment that you see a child’s life changed,  it is all worth it.  I do think however that too many people decide they kind of like kids, so they will teach.  Don’t become a teacher because you have nothing else to do.  Its a lot of work, but if you love it....worth it!

Actuary-  What actually is an actuary?  Well have you seen “Along came Polly”. Ben Stiller is an actuary.  They figure out how much insurance people should get.  Maybe it doesn’t seem super interesting. Well there is more too it than just number punching. If you are good with numbers, and want a job that can reach the 6 figures.... this might be for you!
