In response to the recent salary increases in New York and elsewhere, the California firm of Thelen Reid responds with a two-tier pay scale. The new $160,000 salary is for top performers who bill at least 2000 hours a year. Associates desiring more work/life balance and billing less than 2000 hours will continue to receive $145,000. Oh, and to clarify, these are first year associates.
In addition, Thelen Reid has had the foresight created a flexible program, where associates can move between tiers with some flexibility, all without coming off of partnership track. Twice a year, based on their previous 12 months of work, associates can move into the top-tier. Once per year, associates can opt for the lower tier option.
This is a forward thinking firm! I will bet that their recruiting soars next year.
