During a time in history when African - American soldiers were called upon to serve the United States Army, a proud and fierce military profile emerged. Named Buffalo Soldiers by Native Americans because of their fierce nature and the similarity in texture of their hair to that of the plains buffalo, these soldiers were respected throughout the west. They served in campaigns that shaped the American west in the 9th and 10th Cavalry of the United States Military.
