Artist's Statement
My work is an expression of events and images encountered in my life, reflecting the multicultural, multiracial society of the old and new world.
It is my practice to work loosely on a floor, cutting and re-arranging materials on my canvas. Using wood, dust, paper, pulp and acrylic gel, I create a textured effect that moves between figuration and abstraction.
As my inspiration, I draw upon a spectrum of cultural influences from my native Guyana, the Caribbean, South and North America.
Armed with these images, myths, and folkloric figures, I then evoke a magical landscape leading the viewer into the spirit world, a world wherein we meet the ancestors. Because of the premise on which my work is being made, the appearance of the image on a textured surface often forces the viewer to complete the image in their own minds.
“I am lucky to have been blessed with the talent of an artist. If I were given another avocation I am sure that I would have been unfaithful to God, the world and myself.”
Dudley professes that he gets his courage, determination and strength to be victorious in life through his relationship with his brush, his paints and the canvas.
