Eileen Cave is a multitasking visual artist—PGCS art teacher, arts program consultant and arts advocate. She sees her body of work intensifying through time, as her life experiences grow concurrently with her use of mixed mediums. Recently, Eileen’s work has expanded beyond acrylic painting and mixed media collage into mask-making assemblage.
Eileen grew up in Brooklyn, New York, and now resides in her studio in the Gateway Arts District, in Prince George’s County Maryland in the USA. She was trained in visual arts at Dartmouth College, and her “signature” of colorful, crowd themes from the “Celebration of Life” series is drawn from her journeys throughout the U.S., Caribbean, South America, Europe and Asia. Eileen also produces limited edition lithographic prints, cards and paintings that reflect the power of the family and the contemporary African American experience.
Inspired by the works of Romare Bearden, Eileen’s “Thought Medallion Series” explores mixed media collage as a vehicle for expressing conflict, emotions and contemporary social issues. Her collages may use watercolor, markers, overlay drawings, masks and even bubble wrap to create unique effects. This series is a reminder of the power of the world around us that we cannot control, as expressed in such pieces as “Nature’s Fury,” which depicts the tsunami of a few years ago, and “Farmer’s Magic,” which captures the balance of man and nature in the growing season.
