a Saison or farmhouse ale was traditionally brewed in the winter, to be consumed throughout the summer months. Close to being an endangered style, though there has been a revival in the US.


This is a very complex style. Many examples are very fruity in aroma and flavor. Look for earthy yeast tones, mild to moderate tartness. Lot of spice and with a medium bitterness. They tend to be semi-dry, perhaps with a touch of sweetness.

A Saison from Artisan Brewing, Dexter, Michigan. 

Hazy, bottle conditioned farmhouse ale.  Lightly hoppy, funky flavors, with a hint of lemon.  Refreshingly tart, in a earthy sort of way.  Aggressively carbonated.  Very subdued, yet complex saison.

4.5%abv, serve at 45-50°F
