The October General Meeting of the Society opened with a warm welcome from President D
avid Bailie, who expressed pleasure at the large turnout of members for the evening. By way of his introductory remarks, David noted the Society’s needs someone to be Program Director—an Executive Committee position. In describing the role, David encouraged interested persons to contact him or other Executive members. He then provided an overview of the plan to refresh the ApplesBC web site, including the interface, appearance and ease of navigation. Other announcements included a reference to future meetings that will include a “Back To Basics” feature with tonight’s focus being an overview of the Mac OS X “Dock”; the November meeting will
feature a talk on the “Finder”.
With the Holiday Season approaching, David announced that our annual Christmas Social will take place on December 01/2009; see the Club website for details. Be sure to mark your calendars for this event. As well as some great prizes, the evening will include a presentation by the everinformative Steve Dotto. Be there!
Following the traditional Q&A session and David’s excellent presentation on the Dock, Kit Doan provided a thorough overview of the features and use of ApplesBC web-based Forum. The second half of the meeting featured the first in what is to be an integrated series on producing a movie using some of the great iLife applications including iMovie, iTunes and iDVD. Tonight’s focus of instruction was on the basics of making a digital movie and was very well presented by the Society’s Liz Winterford. By way of introducing her subject, Liz spoke about her own experience and education on making movies, and addressed a wide range of related components including capturing movement, sufficient lighting sources, the importance of white balance, blocking and proper audio recording techni

ques. She emphasized that all these components are initially identified and then bundled together in what becomes a documented master plan for the project with a clearly defined goal. After the explanation of the different components and their place in the production, members divided into teams and, using a number of video cameras, went about making movie clips capturing action and audio. In future meetings, tonight's footage will become the basic clips to be used to demonstrate and teach members how to assemble and edit a movie using the iLife suite. Come and see and learn for yourself.
The meeting closed with the traditional raffle, prizes going to Bruce Alexander, Chris Zacharias, Elke Chappell and Jim Harrison.
