AaL was founded in October, 2001 and opened its doors in April, 2002. It is a  non-profit corporation. Our exhibits and performances feature emerging, established and unknown artists from down the street and around the world. We have partnered with other arts organizations and local schools to bring art to our community and the joy of creativity to everyone.

We are temporarily spaceless and you might assume that therefore we are on hiatus. Anyone who knows AaL president, Tommey, knows better! Our local community theatre group, Riverside Theatre Works, very generously loaned us the use of their lobby for our exhibits. They have been so supportive of us and we urge everyone who reads this to go and enjoy a show (or two) at this neighborhood gem.

The Music Workshop

The Music Workshop is on hiatus but we look forward to seeing you soon!  Forbes Graham remains our musical curator and has done an amazing job of bringing cutting edge music here to Hyde Park.

Welcome

                           Thomas C. Seggers Jr.

Founder & President                         Tommey has been an artist since childhood. A visual artist and poet, he attended the School of Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and Tufts University, Medford as BFA candidate. His work has been exhibited throughout the Northeast and abroad. After settling in Hyde Park, MA, he quickly became aware of the lack of a space dedicated to art and the community. He views art and artists as a conduit for enjoyment and thought provocation that not only benefits the local area, but the surrounding towns and cities and spread to include as far as you’ll let it go.

Ann Herrick                                      Co-founder
Ann has been around artists for all of her life and can’t imagine that anyone would or could live any other way. That belief in the power of art drove her to begin AaL with Tommey. Ann also works as a graphic designer and desktop publisher and knits and crochets in what she laughingly calls her “free time.” This site marks her first foray into the brave new world of web design.

Our Mission Statement

Artists-at-Large is a non-profit gallery and workspace designed to create a dialogue between people who would not normally delve into the world of art and working artists. It will accomplish this goal in three ways:

by creating a gallery that is accessible and friendly to all,

by having exhibiting artists and others lead workshops to introduce everyone to the creative techniques they use and

by encouraging artists to donate a portion of the proceeds of their shows to a charity of their choice.

The overarching goal is to make connections that span race, class and generations and reinforce the deep artistic links that bind us together.

Mary Hogan is a Hyde Park resident and amateur artist who has found beauty and humor in an unlikely place, she creates faces out of the broken parts she finds by the side of the road.

Mary was an elementary school teacher for 15 years in the US and in Ecuador and in the Middle East. Mary says, "Young children are so straight forward and uncomplicated, they see things and express them as they are, working with them for so many years, it helps you to keep a clear, uncomplicated perspective on things as well."

She is also an avid world adventurer; making the most of her time in South America and the Middle East. She has also traveled to Russia, Peru, Nepal, Italy, Greece, Mexico and the Caribbean.

Presently, Mary works full time as a bone technician at the Framingham Heart Study and one evening a week she volunteers at the Horizons shelter doing arts and crafts with the children there.

This is her first foray into having her work curated and learning from the curator about how to mount an exhibit.
