ANIMAL BEHAVIOR FIELD STUDY The Gore Family What a fabulous adventure we had on Saturday, October 11th, 2008!

We met our teacher, Leiana, who introduced us to our tools and explained our adventure.  We got to use a black satchel with the following tools in order to document our findings about bears:

Binoculars - helped us to look closely at the bears
Anemometer - measured the wind speed
Stopwatch - helped to tell how much time passed
Thermometer - measured the temperature
IPOD - watched a video about bear habits
Camera - helped us capture the habits, habitat & characteristics of the bears

Next, we walked to the bear exhibit and saw two bears.  They were most active at the beginning of our 20 minute observation.  Then we saw two others (they were together). After time, Gus began to walk down the cliff and jumped across a space near the waterfall.  He seemed to move very easily, although he weighs 200 pounds!  The other bears were mainly resting and looking for food.  We did also see them drinking and grooming.

Here are some things that we saw in the bears habitat: Snakeskin, fruit (orange peels), grass, standing trees and deadfalls (fallen trees).  Bear house - where they go in to keep warm.  The doors are really heavy (90 lbs.) so that the bears can get in and out without knocking them over.

Here are some things we learned about these specific bears:
Ursula - the oldest bear, she likes to be alone.
Virginia & Gus - usually like to be together (up on the cliff together).
Mimi - Sleeping by the cave.

Saw two areas of scat. It is important to study this so that we can understand what they are eating, if they are healthy, and the gender of the bear.

At the very end, we went to see the Lemur exhibit.  There were two types of lemurs, the Ring-tailed Lemurs were outside & the Red Ruffed Lemurs were inside in the Winter Viewing area.
