Concept Paper
We, the group currently known as WILL.I.AM, have exceeded our own goals and expectations with the creation and completion of our website. Diversity, inclusive leadership, and extraordinary vision are three aspects thoroughly addressed, explored, and conveyed throughout our website in order to fulfill the purpose of the Inclusion Leadership Program. This paper will reveal the behind the scenes thought processes and the underlying premise of inclusion that permeates in the course of each page of the website, leaving anyone exposed to it with a better understanding of WILL.I.AM’s meaning.
One of the main subjects that the website demonstrates consistently is diversity. The incorporation of visual thematic settings is contained on each page along with the various types of diversity displayed by the carefully chosen pictures and leaders selected to be represented on the website. While quickly browsing the site, the pictures may simply seem unique and decorative, however extensive consideration decided which pictures best reflected the corresponding culture. No two pictures are the same, and they all come together to represent the many facets that ethnicity has to offer. We did this in an attempt to show the visitors of our website that the ideations associated with cultures and ethnicities shouldn’t be limited. Diversity is expanded through the demolishing of stereotypes and willingness to learn.
Leadership is another topic that is heavily emphasized on the website. It was decided to incorporate leadership in the website by giving examples of leaders on different geographic scales. Therefore, leaders and a short bio for each of them are included for global, national, regional, and local leaders. What may not be so obvious is the criteria in which the leaders where chosen that demonstrates more than cultural diversity. Unfortunately, there is an automatic correlation between diversity and more strictly speaking-culture. WILL.I.AM has recognized the need to open the minds of others by increasing awareness and helping others to realize that diversity and its acceptance can be by means of age, sex, sexual orientation, nationality, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. The leaders chosen represent a wide range of these criteria in order to eliminate any possible invisible standards of the common concept of a “leader.”
To create this website, WILL.I.AM utilized a variety of technical means to convey our creativity, knowledge, and effort. For example, the Leadership Quiz portion of the website was created using our knowledge of Microsoft Excel and more specifically, the Visual Basic Computer Programming language to make a user-friendly, interactive program to help the website visitors get involved, and not only look at what we have learned, but use what we have learned. Another example would be the Sing-a-Long section that was included in order to convey what WILL.I.AM has learned in an entertaining way, in order to invigorate our visitor’s minds, teach through rhythm and song, and possibly get a record deal. From the video to the music, we have strived in order to show our originality and dedication to our group and its goals.
Through our experiences in the Inclusion Leadership Program, we have learned so much that has transformed our titles from simply students to visionaries. This website is composed of the ideas of the present, and our vision of the future that we plan on molding. Our website has been carefully planned with exquisite detail in order to show its visitors our passion for Inclusive Leadership. WILL.I.AM is extremely excited about the outcome, and hopes that this website serves as a learning tool and inspiration for everyone. The website shows many facets of diversity in its entirety, leadership in its power, vision in its excellence.
