My work focuses on the relationship between computing systems and social interaction. It exploits ethnography, which entails direct observation, to uncover the work that is involved in doing everyday activities. This kind of research, pioneered by Xerox PARC in the 1970s, is used to ground systems development in the work practices that people devise and use to organise everyday life, at work, at home, and at play. It plays a formative role in our understanding of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) and supports requirements engineering, concept development, and systems evaluation. The approach is elaborated in detail in the book Doing Design Ethnography.
