I am going to a small village called Ccolcaque on Wednesday mornings. I will be going with Erasmo on my motorcycle. Erasmo is originally from Ccolcaque and is now an elder candidate with the church in San Jeronimo. Erasmo will be leading a Bible study in the village on Wednesdays. I basically just drive him there and smile, as my Quechua skills do not exist. But I am learning more of the language, and especially more about the culture.
The ride to Ccolcaque is quite an adventure. (Mom, don’t read this!) It takes an hour on the motorcycle. First, it is half an hour up a switch-backed dirt road in fairly good shape to a 14 thousand foot pass. Then the road becomes “flat” (no altitude change) for a while. At this point the road is also covered with small boulders, mud, ruts, small ponds or large puddles, hard sand, and soft sand. The descent into Ccolcaque is the most exciting part of the trip. The road down is never maintained. It is basically two deep tire ruts separated by stones. There are also cliffs. So if there is rain, the road becomes two streams. The road is one of the worst that I have seen in Peru, which says a lot.
I took Erasmo to Ccolcaque a few times in the fall. He then took some work that prevented our weekly trips. Hopefully, we can continue to make our weekly trips to the village. Please pray that God will use us to glorify Himself and share the love of Christ to the people in Ccolcaque. Also pray for our safety as we brave the roads of Peru on motorcycle.
I’m pretty sure this was the first photo ever taken of these kids.
