Hydrophyllum canadense / waterleaf

Shade; rich moist woodland soil;  in early spring the deeply lobed leaves of this plant are beautifully spotted with silver splotches and lie prostrate; as spring progresses into summer, a new beautifully set of leaves arises and replaces the early ones.  The new leaves resemble maple leaves and give the plant a whole new personality.  The flowers are small white or purple bells; a good ground cover in shady gardens; plant 1’ tall; blooms in June; zones 4-7; W. Va. ecotype.
