Lights and Shadows
Lights and Shadows
Assignment 2
These are some of the pictures I took for this particular assignment. The main struggle I had was how to give the pictures depth. Critiques and suggestions are warmly welcomed and greatly appreciated :)
There are a couple of lightning shots I took two nights ago, fell in love with how the lights painted the night sky...

Below are a couple of shots I’m considering for the final 2, perhaps you could provide some comments and feedback as to which would be the better choice?
Focal Length: 50mm Shutter Speed: 1/80 Aperture: F 11
Focal Length: 105mm Shutter Speed: 1/320 Aperture: F 5.3
Assessment Thoughts...
My final selections for this assignment would be the ‘Orange Wall’ and ‘Blue Boat’ shots.
After considering the critiques the class offered regarding these shots, both from the actual tutorial presentations as well as comments from other blogs, this is my conclusion:
Majority liked the ‘Orange Wall’, which I will name Objects of Desire. So let me comment on this first. This title emerges from how I felt when I took this shot, and more importantly what drew me to capture this moment. As I was passing by, this arrangement of objects in front of the wall caught my eye followed by my attention (Yi Kang describes this eloquently). To me this photo offers more than just color but a story of how each object and it’s arrangement found its place in the frame. While walking around taking photos, one line from lecture about Michelangelo’s statement governed my approach. “I do not create the sculpture, I remove the stone that doesn’t belong to reveal the sculpture that was present all along”. I adopted this almost as the law for this shot and the rest of my photos for that matter. When I framed this shot, I was thinking…what details should I exclude and include that would best express the emotions present in the scene before me.
The next shot ‘Blue Boat’, which I name To Live was taken just after docking on Pulau Ubin. The entire boat trip I was thinking…light, shadow, light shadow…so when I chanced upon this scene, I thought, lights and shadows! Well that was until I allowed myself to look at what was within the shadows…I had to capture this moment. What I felt was simply about existence, how man worked to live. I forgotten all about lights and shadows but how I could portray the intense serenity I felt about this man who having a meal that he had earned ferrying us from the mainland. He drew me into the frame, and similarly I wanted to draw people into the frame with this picture.
Peer Evaluation:
For this assignment, I would have to say I enjoyed Yi Kang’s work, especially the shot with the rain. To be honest, I didn’t have an immediate reaction of wow. My reaction was a reflective one, and to me that was the strength of his picture. The muted colors offer a dreamy experience. Another reason for my liking his picture is because I wouldn’t have thought of taking this shot. We were on the same island but produced such extreme points-of-view: the beauty of photography.
Therefore, in consistency with his grading system, I would give him 5.0000 for concept and 4.1259 for technicalities giving a beautiful total of 9.1259
Self Assessment:
For myself, I feel that I have approached this theme well and have produced pictures that appealed to some of my peers. Therefore, I would grant myself 5 for technique and 4.8 for concept = 9.8
