Exploration of Space Collection
We offer a remarkable collection that chronicles the turbulent and astounding period of space exploration history known as the "Space Race". The collection includes the original flown Soviet Vostok 3KA-2 space capsule (1961).
The collection features many other important artifacts and rare documents. Highlights include a MIR space suit worn by astronaut Shannon Lucid, and formerly secret documents and artifacts. The Apollo-Soyuz Cooperation in Space document signed in space by all three American astronauts and the two Soviet cosmonauts (1975) is another spectacular highlight.
The following pages offer information about this collection, parts of which are available for lease, exhibit or purchase.
Historical Background
On October 4, 1957, the Soviet Union successfully launched Sputnik- an innocuous 183-pound sphere carrying only a radio transmitter into space. Sputnik changed everything --- catalyzing the space race. Next came this Vostok 3ka2 space capsule, March 25, 1961, followed by Yuri Gagarin’s historic flight 18 days later, on April 12, 1961.
