NIKE HUMAN RACE 10 K REVIEW
Tuesday, October 27, 2009
Marching to the rhythm of the bass of the song memorex from Zoe, that is how I started this race, which was my comeback to running after a painful injury, and a race to prove myself that I could run again 10 k without any pain.
And what a though challenge did the gods of running (is there such a god on greek mythology??, it would be interesting to do some research) put in front of me.
It was 7:00 am and me and my friend had arrived to the bridge where the race was going to start. It was raining and the temperature was of 17 C. Not a friendly environment for someone that has been running on a treadmill (like a hamster) with an A/C set-up at 25 C. It was cold, and the rain did not helped at all. At first I though that it was only me, but soon I started to realize that the rest of the runners were looking for cover inside the bridge. That part of the bridge that is full of graffiti and that only homeless or “pandilleros” know.
It felt like if we were inside a war bunker or something like that, you can see from the pictures that it was cold and how we were hiding trying to find some heat on the bridge. Anyway, at around 7:40 am, the sun (well, a small part of the sun) started to come out and the temperature went up again, or at least that is what I felt. It could have been that or the fact that the adrenaline was starting to come out and I was started to get excited to start the race.
The amount of runners for this edition of the Human Race was 4,000. 1,000 runners more than the Human Race from 2008. I guess that is a good sign that shows that these types of races will continue for some time!!.
The race started at 8:00 am sharp. I was on the white section (estimated time to complete the race, 60 to 70 minutes) so I was placed waaaaay behind!!. It took me around 4 minutes to get to the starting line due to the amount of participants of the race!!
So I hit the starting line, and I was impressed to see that I was never alone on the race!, there were always people besides me running, and that just keep the energy up!!. I started with what I thought was a slow pace at the beginning, but when I head my Nike +, I realize that I was running faster than my trainings. The energy from the people was making effect.
After the 5 km, I started putting some more speed, and felt good enough to start passing by fellow runners. And I keep my pace until I finished the race. The total time was 61 minutes, not that bad, considering that I am coming back from an ankle injury, and that the last time I ran this race (without any injuries) I made 65 minutes!!
It felt great to comeback to races, and it was something special to come back running this race, because this was the race that started it all on 2008, so it had some meaning.
I saw some people with strollers and their babies, so my wife and my little girl have been warned already....next time, my baby is running with me!!
It was also a great opportunity to met with old friends. Everyone got excited after the race, and there may be a little project coming out from this experience, but I will keep you posted in the future.
Thanks to my wife and my baby for letting me run this race......I was thinking on both of you during most part of the race (except when I needed some fluid to hydrate!!). You are my motor to continue going day by day.....and now I have more reasons to continue looking forward than ever before.
For a new beginning.....
For my friends that read this through Facebook....try accessing the webpage so you can see all the pictures.
